How do you get a bodyweight training program started?

What are the keys to success?

The 3 keys to ensure success with body weight training are good planning, simple execution and good nutrition. Know what you are doing, write down what you did and eat well to ensure what you did turned into what you wanted.

1) Have a plan

Its always good to know what youre doing even when you dont. What that means is, even though you may not know a lot about strength buildings exercises, its good to have a fitness strategy in mind.

A successful bodyweight training program that will work equally well for both weight loss and gaining muscle mass is:

Work out three times per week
Use a bodyweight exercise routine that trains the entire body
Utilize strength building exercises and fat burning exercises
Rest at least one full day between exercise days
Substitute a sprint workout for the lower body exercises once per week
Dont forget family day. Dont worry about adding in a family bike ride, walk in the woods or a day water skiing with the kids. Even though you may have worked out yesterday and today is technically a rest day youll be fine. Family days always take priority.

Now here is that strategy put into a plan

Monday bodyweight exercise routine

Warm up with Jumping Jacks, Shoulder & Neck Rolls and Burpees.
Bodyweight Squats - 20 reps and then
T Push Ups - 10 reps and then
Assisted Band Pull Up - 8 reps (most people can't do full body weight pull ups right off the bat and need assistance) and then
Plyometric Jumps onto a box - 10 reps and then
Mountain Climbers - 10 reps each leg
rest 2 to 3 minutes and then repeat for a total of 3 sets
stretch for a warm down

Wednesday bodyweight workout routine

Warm up jumping rope, Shoulder & Neck Rolls
Wall Squats with thighs parallel to ground - 30 secs (if this bodyweight exercise is too hard, reduce the time or raise your butt off the ground more to reduce the stress) and then
Push Ups, wide grip - 10 reps and then
Horizontal Rows - 10 reps and then
Lunges - 10 reps each leg and then
V Sit Ups - 10 reps
rest 2 to 3 minutes and then repeat for a total of 3 sets
stretch for a warm down

Friday bodyweight exercise routine

Warm up jogging frontwards and backwards, Shoulder & Neck Rolls
Sprint 40 to 50 yards and then
Push Ups, staggered hands - 10 reps and then
Bear Crawls - 30 yards and then
Bulgarian Split Squats and then
Hanging Knee Raise
rest 2 to 3 minutes and then repeat for a total of 3 sets
stretch for a warm down

What makes this a good workout?

We are hitting the full body each workout. There is a major leg movement, an upper body pushing move, an upper body pull, another lower body exercise (remember to hit the large muscles as they burn the most energy) and an abdominal or core exercise.

We are varying exercise throughout the week. Variety helps to stimulate muscle growth.

Our bodyweight workout routine is a circuit workout. This is very effective and efficient. It keeps the heart rate up but allows you to keep moving through the workout.

2) Keep track of your progress

Get a training log.

A simple notebook works fine. Write down what you did; sets, reps, weights and how you felt. If you got a good pump doing something, make a note of it.

A training log will help you be more consistent (a log shows if youre missing workouts) and you will progress faster. See what you did last time and try to do better. A rep or two more is progress.

Make sure youre not hitting chest, back and arms all the time but forgetting about legs and abs.

You cannot fool the log book.

Record your eating plan in the log as well. If you are not making progress, check the log.

Wow, I didnt realize I had ice cream five times last week. Maybe the coco puffs and can of pop really isnt the best breakfast to start my day.

Coffee is fine. Coffee with 4 teaspoons of sugar is not.

Write it down. It keeps you honest.

3) Eat well

Like it or not the nutrition side of the fitness equation is far more important than the exercise part. If you want your body weight training program to be a success, watch your food intake.

Sorry, thats just the way it is, especially when you are are older.

You simply cannot out train a bad diet.

Nutrition is an area where Conventional Wisdom is wrong more than it is right. A lot of stuff we grew up believing as fact simply is not true. It is too complicated an issue to discuss thoroughly here but a high level eating plan looks like this:

Eat Real Food. If its in a box or a bag, dont bring it home. Really.
Stay as close to the source as possible. For example, an apple is preferred over apple juice. Fresh berries yes; strawberry jam, no. Corn on the cob is fine (not a lot of food value but quite tasty) high fructose corn syrup is poison (and in most highly processed foods). Almonds are great. An Almond Joy? You get the idea.
Simple carbs are not your friend. Bread, cereal, crackers, pasta and on and on will make you fat. Period. It doesnt matter that you love it or youve eaten it your whole life or you can never give it up. It still makes you fat. All this stuff must go if you adhere to Rule 1. Sorry.
Dont eat by the clock. Our habit of lunch @ noon or dinner @ 6 contribute to overeating. Eating by ritual is not good. Eat when you're hungry. Stop when youre full. Keep it simple. If you eat the right foods, those that have higher energy densities, you will be satiated longer and not needing lunch at 12.
Dont count calories. If you are counting calories, you are dieting. We dont want to diet (verb) as in restricting things. We want to have a diet (noun) that feeds us well and we enjoy eating. If you are counting calories, you are losing the battle and probably already fat.
Eat more fat. Yes I said that. Good fat is probably the one macronutrient you are short on. Why? Because it has been drilled into us for years that fat makes you fat.

The low fat revolution was probably the single most devastating thing that happened to us in the last 30 years. Low fat (which is synonymous with high sugar) has produced more fat people than all the other diet fads combined.

Fat is the preferred fuel for the human body. Yes your body wants fat to run the machine, not carbs.

Good fats are animal fats (yes saturated fats are good), olive oil, avocados, coconut fat, nuts, fatty fishes like salmon, mackerel and sardines, butter (real butter, not margarine or other funky spreads), ghee or cream.

Eat fat. Lose weight. I promise.

A great body weight training program is one that you like doing and gets good results. If you like doing it, you will keep doing it. If you are making progress, losing weight or gaining muscle, you will be motivated to keep improving.

Have a plan that makes sense and execute the plan. Keep track of your progress so you can measure the results. Whats working and what can I change?

Eat real food. The single biggest factor controlling your destiny is what you put in your mouth.

Eat real food. Get real results. Dont give up.

Home canning has been a part of our family lifestyle for as long as I can remember. When the harvest was complete and preserved in our family cellar I loved to be the one to give the final count on the fruit of our labors - peaches, pears, applesauce, beets, green beans, strawberry jam, and....PICKLES! I loved the pickles.

One particular winter day I took a walk down to the cellar. I glanced around the room, it was loaded with beautifully home canned fruit and vegetables right from our family garden and orchard. But...I had my mind set on one thing. I carefully scanned the shelves - Ah ha I found what I was looking for -- a bottle of dill pickles I had canned myself.

As the bottle came off the self, my mouth started to water. Those pickles looked so good, I could hardly wait to get the lid off the bottle.

I finally made it to the kitchen and popped off the lid - immediately the aroma of those home canned dill pickles floated through the room - I couldn't wait any longer. Out came the biggest pickle and I sunk my teeth into it.

Surprise! My joy quickly turned to despair when my teeth squished into a soggy dill pickle - not even worth eating! Almost weeping I ran to mother. What bad thing had happened to my pickles?

With a twinkle in her eye and a half smile, she started quizzing me down: "How long did the cucumbers wait before you pickled them?" "What size were the cucumbers that you used?" "Did you get them right out of the hot water bath when it started to boil?" Etc.

After playing detective for a couple of minutes, she chuckled and gave me these important secrets:

1. Pick your cucumbers early in the morning and bottle them within 24 hours. The quicker the better. If you start with fresh, crisp, firm cucumbers you will have a better pickling experience.

2. Don't let the cucumbers get too big. Smaller cucumbers become better pickles.

3. When you process the bottles of pickles - make sure you DON'T over cook them. The less they are cooked, the more crisp and crunchy they will be.

Making yogurt at home is considered a complex job by most people. "It's a lot of hassle!" reflects Andra, a big fan of yogurt, who would love to make her own but is not sure how...

Even after a lot of work, it still turns out sour, watery or runny -- something that you were not expecting in the beginning. To make things worse, it sometimes tastes so weird that you can even feel the metallic taste of the pot it's made in. "It just takes away the joy of making something as nutritious and delicious as yogurt." She sadly concludes.

This makes you turn to store-bought yogurt instead which tastes really well as compared to what you can make at home. But then you are unknowingly compromising on the effects it may have on your health. It contains sugars, artificial sweeteners, colors, flavors and thickeners, likegelatin (glue made from animal bones), pectin (a bio-polymer acid, lab made ingredient)andpowdered milk. To increase shelf life, it is heat processed which often destroys live bacterial cultures. In short, almost all the healthy, nutritious stuff is processed OUT! 

Believe it or not, the secret to making thick, creamy and delicious yogurt lies in the kind of pot used. The conventional metal pots don't let excess water filter out which then calls for straining. Using a pot made of a semi-porous material lets excess water evaporate leaving the yogurt thick and creamy and altogether eliminating the tedious process of straining.

For this reason, I personally use a pure-clay pot -- as it is not only microscopically porous but is also, naturally inert, i.e., it is free from chemicals or metal toxins. So, the natural taste of yogurt is not altered and all you get is thick and delicious home-made yogurt.

Making yogurt in these pots is very easy: Just three steps involved, all you need is milk (raw or pasteurized), live culture (left over yogurt from previous batch), and a pure-clay pot. When making for the first time, you can also use plain whole milk yogurt from the store for the culture, just make sure it has live-cultures (you can see that mentioned in the ingredient list).

Step 1:

Heat the milk: Pour milk into your pot and set it on the stove top. Start the stove on low and in 5 minutes increase to medium. In about 30 minutes, you should see tiny bubbles forming on the surface. When at least a quarter of the top surface is covered in bubbles, the milk has reached temperature, turn stove off. [There's no need to insert a metal or plastic temp gauge, this indicator is reliable and sufficient.*] 

Step 2:

Add the live-cultures:Open lid and let the milk cool a bit. Again, no need for a thermometer with clean hands put your little finger in the milk and if you can hold it there for 5 seconds, the milk is ready for the culture. If you can't hold your finger in for 5 seconds, wait some more. When ready, add the culture to the milk and briefly stir it in. 

Step 3:

Set to incubate: Close lid and set the pot in the oven for about 6-8 hours. Unlike other pots, a pure-clay pot is a great heat retainer, so you dont need to turn the oven on. Just leave the light on and your thick, delicious yogurt will be ready.  

Take the pot out of the oven and let it sit outside at room temperature for about 30 minutes. Then refrigerate and serve chilled. There is no need to add any additives, thickeners or straining... the pot does all the work!

Rump roast or round steak is very easy to prepare and great for serving a large group of people. Rump roast can be served with just about any side dish you can imagine and is very versatile. It is also very tasty and has a very low fat content but it can also be tough if not prepared properly. By using a few different cooking techniques you will learn what methods and recipes you like best. The following three recipes are simple to prepare and will leave your guests wanting more.
Baked Rump Roast

This is about the easiest recipe you will find for rump roast but it turns out very good. Simply use about a four pound rump roast with one can or packet of french onion soup and a few tablespoons of vinegar. After placing the roast in a pan, pour the vinegar on it and set it an a preheated 350 degree oven. After the roast has cooked for an hour, add the onion soup to the pan and place back in the oven for about three more hours.

Italian Rump Roast In The Crock Pot

This is a very unique and tasty recipe that is also easy to prepare. Add a couple cans of tomato sauce, Italian seasoning mix, and a large jar of spagehhti sauce to a three or four pound roast. Put everything in your crock pot and season with garlic salt. Now top the roast with about a half cup of chopped onions and cook for a bout seven hours on the low setting. Serve over rice or pasta.

Grilled Rump Roast

This is my personal favorite and if you are short on time, this will be your best bet. You will need a four or five pound roast, a packet of onion soup mix, and a quarter cup of both mustard and water. The first thing you will need to do is brush the mustard on to the meat. Then you will drizzle the onion soup mix on the roast and then roll the meat in aluminum foil. Now simply grill the roast for about two hours over medium heat and you are ready to serve.

All three of these recipes are delicious and easy to prepare. You will just need to decide which one suits your taste. If you are short on time go with the grilled and if you have all day, you can try the crock pot recipe.

The diet is very low in calories. Some versions of the diet include a grapefruit at every meal which means the diet has 900 calories. Others feature it at just one meal which takes the diet down to 750 calories. Obviously, these calorie levels are not sustainable, but remember this is just a 3 day diet. You can fast for that long, so having some food to keep you going won't harm you.

The second positive thing I'm going to mention in my 3 day diet reviews is that there is no fancy cooking required to sustain this diet. If you can boil an egg and cook veggies in the microwave, you can go on this diet. The foods required are basic: cottage cheese, saltine crackers, carrots, apples, etc.

The third thing that is nice about this diet is that the food you are asked to eat in no way harms you. You'll be eating fruits, vegetables, lean meats, etc. In many ways, you are better off with this program than you would be eating a couple of meals at a fast food joint. There's no "trick" to the 3 day diet, it's just very low in calories.

But there are some downsides to the diet. For instance, you may only lose a couple of pounds for all of your starving, not the 10 pounds some proponents claim.

Also, I would be remiss in not mentioning that extended use of this diet program would surely lead to anorexia. The name of the diet is "The 3 Day Diet" for a reason - it should only be used for three days.

Another thing worth mentioning in this 3 day diet reviews is that you are probably going to be hungry on this program. The meals are quite small. Breakfast and lunch are about 200 calories a piece and dinner is about 350 calories. If you are used to 2000 to 3000 calorie diets (what most Americans eat), you are going to be famished. If you can suck it up and say "it's only 3 days" you'll survive. But, if you are not mentally prepared for the hunger challenges on the 3 day diet, you are likely to give in to your urge to eat more.

In short, the 3 day diet does work. You will probably lose between 3 to 6 pounds. The 10 pound claims are from very large people who try it. Most of the pounds lost will be from water weight. You can't go on the diet on an extended basis.

My 3 day diet reviews overall picture is that if you want to lose weight for a specific purpose in the very near future (a wedding next weekend, an upcoming high school reunion), it's worth doing. As an extended diet plan, it won't work.

Failure to do this will lead to food tasting all the same, fishy chips and chippy fish!. Its important to do this not only because of the products that remain in the oil after you have used it spoiling flavors but also because the high temperatures attained during the deep fat frying process itself can lead to partial decomposition of the oil and the formation of toxic side products.

Another simple question that often arises relates to whether the frying pan should be aluminium, stainless steel or cast iron. Which is best? In my view there are benefits associated with each and there is no clear winner. However, this said, I would suggest that when selecting your pan ensure that it is: easy to clean and of a deep and of solid construction.

As a general guide, dont buy cheap! It isnt safe, nor will it be economical over the longer term as cheaper pans just dont last. As such a quality stainless steel pan or one made of cast iron are the long term winners albeit they tend to be more expensive.

So what cooking oils should be used? The general advice is that deep fat frying is only safe when stable oils are used. A stable oil is one with a high smoke point.

Personally as I live and cook in France for much of the year I use and much prefer olive oil. I believe this to be the best deep fat frying oil to use by the proverbial mile. The choice is yours.

To conclude, here are 10 simple healthy tips for when youre deep fat frying next:

1. Take care when deep fat frying; accidents easily happen and without the right care your food will not turn out for the best;
2. When deep fat frying always ensure that the fat is 350-375 degrees F and that you have a burner that can retain the required temperature after the food has been added to the oil. Use a deep fry thermometer to make sure the temperature is right. If you dont have a thermometer you can use a half inch cube of white bread. The oil is ready for cooking when you drop this into the oil and it browns up in 60 seconds; If the oil is continuously smoking then it is far too hot at such a time its critical you turn off the source of heat immediately
3. Cooked food should be kept hot whilst the fat is draining off onto absorptive paper after deep frying; to keep food warm keep put it in the oven at 180-200 degrees F
4. Never leave a deep fat fry pan thats being used unattended. Keep a constant eye on the pan. Above all watch for over heating. Keep a lid close by to cover your pan should it catch fire;
5. When deep fat frying potatoes cook until they are just starting to crisp up, remove and drain on a rack..
6. When deep fat frying foods, inevitably particles from previous batches of food are left in the oil; these should be removed by straining as they will spoil the taste of the food cook thereafter; the oil should then be stored in a capped bottle; always discard your oil if it becomes dark in color;
7. When deep fat frying always dry the food before you put it into the hot oil.
8. Deep fried food needs to cook evenly so dont overcrowd the pan;
9. Never fill your pan too full of oil. There should be at least 2" of space from the top of the oil to the top of the pan as the oil will fizzle up when the food is first introduced. And
10. Do not allow water to come into contact with hot oil or there could be a violent and dangerous explosion.
